Who came up with the name "United States of America"?

An interesting bit of new evidence has recently surfaced that the name of the new nation, featured on the freshly-written Declaration of Independence from Britain, may not have been the brainchild of Thomas Jefferson. Who came up with the name? This article from the Christian Science Monitor may provide the answer.

It seems as though "A PLANTER" came up with the name of our nation. Even though there is no confirmed identity for this author he still retains the credit for coining The United States of America. Thomas Jefferson may have read the article in the Virginia Gazette and used that in the Declaration of Independence,or he may have thought up the phrase on his own. Either way "A Planter" still is the first known person to publish the "United States of America".

I think that it is a little disapointing that the mysterious planter's identity has not been revealed because i believe that he was the one who came up with the name "United States of America". Although there are endless possibilites of who this mysterious person may be, i don't think a simple assumption at who this person is would be accurate because virtually, "A PLANTER" could be anyone. I do think that it is very interesting how there is a posibility of "A PLANTER" being Jefferson with the evidence of both of them having the same writing styles in some cases. But in my opinion, until any new evidence is found, dating back before the Gazette was published using "United States of America", it is safe to say that "A PLANTER" has been the originator of the name "United States of America".

Just because his words reached everyone doesn't mean it was just his idea. The need for independence for the colonies was seen by many. I bet a lot of people thought of names for the new country but just one surpassed all and was capitalized on the declaration of independence. Its a great name! And actually the fact that "A PLANTER" may have been the originator of the name makes me feel even better about our country and its origins. I think it shows that everyone even a planter had a part in making it great. "A PLANTER" could be anyone.

It's interesting that many times, history gives credit to the most known people of the period, even though sometimes it is just regular people who come up with ideas such as the name of our country. I like how in America, even "A PLANTER" can make a huge difference. It is cool that even today we can learn more about what happened back when we were fighting for independence all those years ago.
